where we found them

The sampling locations for our investigation varied in plant types and in particular, pollen coloration. Data was collected in the Nature Museum’s Garden, Prairie, Black Oak Savannah, Butterfly Garden, North Pond and beyond museum grounds in places such as Grandma’s Garden, the French Gardens, Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool, and The Sweet Water Foundation’s community garden. These places had a variety of native and cultivated flowers with different hues of pollen, allowing for a diverse sample.

Prairies consist of large swatches of grasslands with flowers and tall grasses, as well as shrubs and other low types of vegetation. Savannahs are very similar, except that they contain trees throughout the low lying grasses that provide shade for other plants. The Butterfly Garden that we sampled from was solely flowers, including all types of milkweed and butterfly weed as well as an abundance of bergamot and purple cone flowers. This is also very similar to the area near the Lily Pool that we sampled from, which also contained evening primrose.
